Caleb D wins the 2023 IV Mens!

Another year has passed and another champion has been crowned. After 2 stellar rounds (Edgewood and Oak Ridge) Putnum County native and former IVCC eagle, Caleb Dyzierynski went wire to wire to win his first ever IV Mens Championship.

Caleb started his tournament off HOT in round 1 at his home course, Edgewood. Ben started his tournament birdying 4 of his 5 holes and shooting a bogey free 32 front 9. The back 9 was just as good, adding 3 more birdies before making his lone blemish on the 18th to shoot a 34 for a -6 (66). He came into day 2 tied for the lead with friend, Ben Cyr who also shot a 66 day one in the same group as Ben.

But it was Caleb who stedied his nerves and stayed off the field that was clawing at his heels. After a bogey on 4, Caleb rallied with a birdie on 5, eagle on 6, and birdie on 7 to shoot a -3, 33 front 9. Caleb would need those birdies because the back 9 showed its teeth early. With a double bogey on 7 and bogey on 8 the rest of the field was brought back to life. With eventual runner up Jerry Joiner making birdies on 11 and 13 and then holing out for eagle on 14 to close the gap. It was going to be a dog fight. But it was a clutch birdie on 15 that gave Caleb the coushion he needed to hold off Jerry and hoist the coveted trophy!

Congrats Caleb!!

A class champ….his golf game is not Ticky Tkach

This was Brents to lose. After shooting an incredible -1 (71) in the opening round, Brent held a 4 shot lead over a talented field of players.

With 2 birdies and 2 bogies on his front 9 in the first round, Brent was in good form. But after a shocking bogey on the par 5, 10th hole, one would think that possibly fatigue or nerves could have taken over. But that was not the case. Brent went on to birdie holes 12 and 14 to shoot -1 (35) on the back.

Day 2 Brent was paired with 2 high school heavy hitters at Marquette and Streator respectively.

Oak was a bit more challenging with tougher pins and firmer greens. with players falling and rising up the leaderboards all around, Brent never lost more than 1 shot to the field overall as it was eventual runner up Cole Park from Streator that tied for the low round of the group with other final group player and eventual 3rd place finisher, Adam Harris, with co 79’s. But that was not enough to catch Brent. With a final day +8 (80), Brent held on to win the IV Mens A class!

B class champs….PKO!

Following the theme of 2023, Pat Kerchner went wire to wire to win B class with a knock out in round 2! (sorry I couldnt resist….)

After an exciting first round four players found themselves separated. Those players being Pat Kerchner, Scott Lilly, Kevin Bauer and Scott Robbins. (73/74/75/76)

But it would be Pat that would withstand the rest of the field. With the other 3 players in the group failing to shoot in the 70’s to keep up with Pats 78, leaving Pat with a 6 shot win over the 2022 B Class defending champion (Scott Lilly). Along with Steve Harvey jumping up 3 spots with his own 78 to take the 3rd place spot.

C class champs

Clay Buffington fended off a tight field to hoist is first C Flight championship trophy. After an opening round 85, Clay sat outside the final group sitting in 5th place. But after a consistent 86 (third best score for the flight), Clay shot up the leaderboard and won the title by only 1 shot! After first round leader Zach Lilja stumbled down the leaderboard, the early concensous was that day 1 2nd place holder, and eventual runner up, Brian Watson would be holding the title, but after a roughh 16th hole and giving back 2 shots to Clay the leaderboard was updated and it was Clay that was not sitting atop the standings. With clay finishing only +1 in his last 2 holes matching the last 2 holes of Brian. Clay held off having to have a play off and secured the top prize!

Congrats Clay!

Senior Champ does it again…the spark wont go out.

If it aint broke…dont fix it. That goes for yet another wire to wire win in 2023 for this event as well as Spark Larkin’s golf game.

Spark, the defending senior flight champion, went back to back and will look forward to doing the coveted three peat.

After a first round 78 and being tied for the lead with eventual runner up Gary Zemann, Spark found a second gear at Oak Ridge. Firing off an incredible +1 (73) to win by an impressive 8 shots over the next golfer.

Over the weekend Spark put together 5 birdies enroute to his most recent title. We look forward to 2024 and see if history is made!

The First ever IV Mens LEGEND Champ!

No Stranger to the podium. Local legend Tony Muscato was the recipient of the first ever IV Mens Legend divison by being the lowest scorer in ALL the field for those 65+.

Tony is what we all aspire to be as a golfer as we get older. Shooting under par frequently and still contending to win any tournament he enters. With an impressive 73 - 76 over the weekend which was already good enough to finish T16 in the Championship flight. Tony’s stellar play led him in the Legends flight to bringing home a piece of IV Mens history.

Congrats Tony!
